Fabulous soccer-themed craft products, ranging from beaded wirework boots to funky felt soccer hats, are on show at a soccer-themed trade show organised by the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI).

The showcase is mainly aimed at buyers in the retail, conference and hospitality industries to ensure that they are stocked up for the soccer mega-event. Some 75 craft producers have taken part.

The show is being held at the CCDI’s headquarters at 75 Harrington Street from 23-26 March, and has to date attracted not only retail buyers, but representatives of government departments who are eager to beautify their offices to welcome soccer visitors to South Africa.

The CCDI, a Section 21 company now in its tenth year, started its two-year soccer festival project in 2008 when it was commissioned by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation to research economic opportunities around the football event.

It has supported Western Cape craft producers in developing diverse, novel products linked to the area. Many have been inspired by visits to iconic sites such as Robben Island and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
