On 4 May, the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism, Minister Alan Winde, hosted a meeting with The Cape Music Industry or Cape MIC as it is popularly called.
Peter Theunissen, the CEO of this sector body or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) as they are called, pulled together an impressive set of players in the music industry from far and wide including Jozi our main competitor. Peter made an impressive presentation that showed the growth in digital as well as in live music. He also debunked a great deal of myths relating to how giving music away for free does mean revenue for artists rather than not.
Our world is changing rapidly and the ways of generating revenues are many. Peter also showed the strong case Cape Town has for supporting its music industry – the high level of talent, the growing industry base, the strong eventing environment and a range of convergences with other industries like film. The MEC was impressed, the room was excited and there was strong support shown for building up CAPE MIC as an industry body.
