Encounters put documentary on the map in the mother city. Tooting its own trumpet as “premier documentary Festival in South Africa”, it is a properly organised annual film extravaganza with an angle on human rights, heritage and social issues that sets a standard for conscious entertainment.
Recognising that filmmaking is an expensive – and therefore largely privileged – expression as well as an education medium, Encounters also houses the Close Encounters Documentary Laboratory which has, to date, helped forty films come into being.
In this way, it contributes directly to debate and dialogue in our paper-perfect democracy and, to that end, Encounters’ new loyalty programme is calling for patronage from supporters of freedom of thought, speech and action.
“Globally, there is a gradual decrease of funding for the Arts,” a recent letter to Friends Of Encounters pointed out. “This has compelled many arts institutions to become more innovative in their fundraising approach. Membership is the most sustainable way to keep organisations like Encounters alive. Unless the Festival can secure new sources of funding, it will be difficult to sustain.
“We are now calling upon you, our audience, to help grow the Festival and ensure that we can continue to provide a quality programme for generations to come. Your membership will also help to enhance the prestige of the Festival.”
Membership comes in the form of:
• Financial support
• Provision of professional services
• In kind sponsorship
