It’s that time of the year when events overtake us and we have way too much choice available. In the last few weeks you may have been at or missed the commemoration of the emancipation of slaves (30 November/1 December) at The Prestwich memorial, been to the Michaelis annual art student exhibition and to student exhibitions at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s faculty of Arts and Design. You may have even had a chance to see an exceptional musical event by Norwegian musican Mari Boine with Mandosini and Abaqondisi Brothers at The Assembly, or the Strengths and Convictions exhibition opening (with talks) at Iziko SA National Gallery (it’s still on) that celebrates the lives of our South African Nobel Peace Laureates.
On the 4th of December we hope you had a chance to experience the FIFA final draw with a great lineup of musicians on Long Street and in the evening got to The Assembly for the launch of the new African Dope album – Mix and Blend. At least you can still buy that album on the net or at great music stores. While doing that make sure you buy the new Blk Sonshine album which has been a long time in the offing and will soon be released. Also make sure you buy some great Cape Town writers like Zinaid Meeran’s hilariously funny and biting debut satire Saracens at the Gate and Margie Orford’s third crime novel Daddy’s Girl which follows the trail of investigative journalist Dr Clare Hart, and Bryan Rostron’s Black Petals, which is set around the central city and deals with memory and lapsed hopes.
Don’t forget to support local visual artists this year for Christmas: buy art at some of many galleries in the Central City or find some stunning Cape crafts by using the Cape Craft and Design new Craft shopping map.
