The Goematronics Remix Competition
The success of Die Antwoord and District 9 show that the distinctively local idioms, images and textures have much more cache in our globalised world than something that sounds, looks or feels international. In response, Creative Cape Town started to wonder what Cape Town’s distinctive music idiom is, and felt goema, at the heart of jazz standards by Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen and Basil “Mannenberg” Coetzee, was it.
That is why, together with BPM magazine, Mutha FM, and Paul Bothner Music, we’re challenging musicians nationwide to use Cape Town’s distinctive music idiom and put it at the heart of your sound, and enter the Goematronics Remix Competition.
How does it work?
The competition will run from 1 July to 28 August 2011. To qualify, entrants must load at least one goema-inspired remix onto the Goematronics group on SoundCloud before midnight on 28 August 2011.
Goema beats, banjo and sax samples can be downloaded from SoundCloud or entrants can create their own.
To give you an idea of the many ways in which samples can be used, songs by Kalahari Surfers, Fletcher (Krushed & Sorted), Mr Mo, and Peter A and Erefaan Pearce have also been loaded.
Remixes must be loaded onto SoundCloud and meta-tagged with your email address. Generate your own meta-tag for free and be sure to keep your file size under 10MB.
The judging panel includes Roach (African Dope Records) and Mr Mo (Mofunk) and Denver Turner (ex Moodphase5 and Tykoon Suit). The winners will be announced during Creative Week Cape Town, between 9 and 18 September 2011.
What can you win?
First prize includes a full week’s worth of Red Bull Studio time – including use of the studio, recording and music production equipment, as well as the time of an engineer to oversee the project – valued at R35 000, as well as studio software Cakewalk from Paul Bothner Music, valued at R5 500.
What are the rules?
- Remixes using uncleared samples will be disqualified. An uncleared sample is a musical work, loop or sample that is copyrighted (ie, you didn’t create it). Entrant(s) are free to use royalty-free loops, stems and samples and/or sounds the entrant(s) has originally created.
- All trademarks and logos are protected. All rights of the producer and the owner of the recorded work are reserved. Unauthorised copying, hiring, renting, public performance and broadcasting of this record, remix or remix parts is prohibited.
- Neither Cape Town Partnership, Red Bull Studios, Red Bull, BPM Mag nor Paul Bothner Music accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, liability, injury or upset caused to or suffered by you as a result of entering the competition or winning the prize. Cape Town Partnership, Red Bull Studios, Red Bull, BPM Mag nor Paul Bothner Music further accept no liability for any damage caused to any person’s computer or other electronic device relating to or resulting from downloading any materials, including so-called computer viruses, in connection with this competition. Nothing shall exclude us from our liability for death or personal injury as a result of our negligence.
- Your submission of a remix in this contest constitutes your agreement to these rules: That the judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- This promotion is sponsored by Creative Cape Town, Red Bull Studios and Bothners. South African law governs this contest and prize winner(s) agree that any claims against sponsors must be filed in South Africa.
