HALDANE MARTIN RE-LAUNCHES THE GLOBE CHAIR

Furniture designer, Haldane Martin has done it again: The Cape Town-based designer has launched the Globe Chair re-edition prototype at the Rooms on View décor and design exhibition at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Martin, whose furniture design company, Haldane Martin, was founded in 2002, has, in his own words, given the Globe Chair “a second chance”.

“I like to take one good idea and translate it into a small collection of furniture pieces,” Martin said of his latest creation.

“The Globe Chair was originally designed and patented in 1921, and made in Durban until the early 1940’s. Everyone who sees the chair has a fond memory of a favourite grandmother using them in her kitchen.

“Its plain simplicity belies its real ingenuity, the unique bolt-together assembly system. This incredibly strong assembly system and the durable solid bent wood frame is the reason that you still find these highly sought-after chairs in use today.”

Martin said he felt the chair deserved a second chance. “So I am putting it back into production, having made one small improvement – hiding the assembly bolts without compromising on the strength and offering it in a variety of contemporary finishes, from raw beech to brightly coloured
spray finishes.”

Haldane Martin, the company, was founded in 2002 by Martin. The company designs and produces all their pieces in South Africa. Their designs are influenced by modern design with references to indigenous African design and materials. The company also works with architects to design interiors for offices, hotels and restaurants. In addition to the aesthetics, their furniture also pays close attention to its sustainability, using green materials and processes whenever possible. their approach to furniture involves a series of small collections.

The Rooms on View exhibition is South Africa’s foremost decorating show and offers exclusive insight into the status of South African décor and design. It has joined the ranks of other international décor fairs as a fixture in the diaries of decorators, buyers and tastemakers around the world.

The exhibition runs from 27 to 30 May.
