Oy! Don’t miss out on transatlantic sonic explorations!

Pro Helvetia, Cape Town, (the Swiss Arts Council) is a strong supporter of inter-continental artistic adventures, and strongly open minded.

Their latest event sees Oy (aka Joy Frempong), a Swiss-Ghanaian singer-songwriter, performing her unusual and surprising melange of words, rhythms, and melody in and around Cape Town.

Oy is in Southern Africa from February to March 2o11, to perform material from her solo album “First Box Then Walk” (Creaked Records, 2010).

It’s not Oy’s first time, as the artist previously visited in 2009 with Filewile, an electric outfit she sings with. However, it is her first solo album –  an accented sonic exploration of sounds, rhythms and rule-breaking that conjures colourful, bizarre visions that ascribe to nothing we know. At least, not yet. Given half an ear, her material is, in turns, meditative, and disruptive, and consistently intriguing.

I saw Oy perform at the Woodstock Industrial Center – she was AMAZING! I have never enjoyed a concert that much – she created the music right in front of you in ways you have never seen before. Can’t wait for her to visit Cape Town again :)
