South African identity is vibrant, diverse, migrant and converse.
The widespread welcome of Die Antwoord, Spoek Mathambo & Mshini Wam, Freshlyground and Simphiwe Dana shows that the world is listening. Local music expresses a South Africa that is neither old nor new, but definitely YOU.
Cape Town has a burgeoning independent rock and electronic music scene and a proud, often obscured musical history heard through Minstrels Carnival (Klopse), Sangkoors, Nagkoors, and local Jazz legends (Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen, Basil “Mannenberg” Coetzee).
Via Creative Cape Town(a programme of the Cape Town Partnership), the beat of Cape Town Goema is enjoying contemporary cultural resonance in its projects Goemarati and Goematronics.
The Goematronics Remix competition, was a national competition in conjunction with BPM Magazine, Mutha FM, Creative Cape Town and African Dope Records, 1st July – 28th of August 2011.
Entrants were asked to create two tracks of new music drawing on Cape Town’s musical legacy, Goema.
they could : create from their own samples or draw from the samples on Soundcloud.
Prizes : were valued over R40 000 include Red Bull Studio time, and studio software Cakewalk from Bothners.
The winners: will be announced at a special event held during Creative Week Cape Town – 9 – 18 September2011.
The submissions have been diverse, from musical style to geographical origins. From KZN we had a little House, and from the heart of CT, a cinematic surprise of minimalist proportions. The submissions proved one thing quite clearly – whoever we are and however we sound, we are talented, Cape Town! Listen to ghoemalove, goema-tronics-super-wolk-remix and an-escapists-dream amongst others.
