Andy Warhol would weep in his eternal sleep to know that he was missing the party. If you’re talking self-acclaimed pop culture in Africa, March is mapping it out at Toffie Pop Culture Festival at The Cape Town City Hall.
When : 24 – 26 March 2011
Where : Cape Town City Hall
The 2nd annual festival brings you the (first) world on a plate with a design exhibition, a 2-day conference, workshops and an after-party. In a post modern, pop culture twist, it’s a happening at The City hall, that beautiful building we want back in action.
The festival features a long list of illustrious speakers, including Daito Manabe (Japan, Artist/programmer),
Jürg Lehni (Switzerland, inventor)
and Tumi Molekane (South Africa : Musician)
It also has a range of exhibitions and musical entertainment that will highlight some of the city’s contemporary contributions to aesthetic, culture and lifestyle.
Speaking of lifestyle, the ticket prices are a bit of a concern (100 student tickets reserved at R500, standard ticket prices R750). Hannelie, at The President responded promptly.
CCT : “How does The President justify the cost of the tickets in comparison to other similar entertainment-meets-education events on the Cape Town creative calendar (e.g. Design Indaba Conference [more expensive, but longer], UCT Summer School 2011[cheaper], GIPCA colloquium 2o11 [cheaper], Infecting The City Festival2011 [mostly free])? Like Toffie, these examples all include experts in their fields but they run for longer than Toffie Festival.)”
Hannerie Visser: ”Each event is different and unique in its own way, so one can’t really compare pricing at all. To us it was important that the festival is affordable and accessible to as wide an audience as possible.”
In other words, Pop goes the Diesel.
