We love the Book Lounge. They stock great titles, they give us free wine, and they’re not shy to promote others in the book trade.
This week they sent us news of an imminent threesome on Thursday 25 November 2010 with two other bookish events you may like to love…and may also need to send an avatar to make sure you don’t miss out.
1. What’s the worth of a poem out of context? Finuala Dowling’s Difficult to Explain (Modjaji) is a poetry collection of new, unpublished work by the author and established writers she has mentored. It includes practical exercises and analyses on creative writing.
@ the Book Lounge, 5.30 for 6pm
2. If we can’t cry at least we can laugh. Zapiro’s combined launch of Do You Know Who I Am and ZA News 2 (Jacana) brought to you by Zaprock Productions and Both Worlds Do You Know Who I Am is Zapiro’s 15th annual collection the ZA News , his second DVD.
@ ZA News Studio, 80 Jordaan Street, 5.30 for 6pm *Please RSVP to thando@jacana.co.za
3. Joint launch : two sides of the story to tell a multifaceted tale of interlocking lives. In the Dark With My Dress on Fire by Blanche La Guma tells a personal Struggle story. Blanche is a nurse and midwife in poor communities, supports her writer-activist husband Alex La Guma, raises two sons in trying times, and operates as an underground activist within a clandestine Communist cell. For more perspective on the personal, Roger Field’s biography of Blanche’s husband draws on a very wide range of his writing and artwork. Alex la Guma: A Literary Political Biography blends biography and literary and political analyses. Former Constitutional Court Judge, Albie Sachs, will be attending as a guest Speaker.
@Lobby Books, 6 Spin Street, 5.30 for 6pm
That’s quite a calendar entry. It’s comforting to know that despite the ADD of the World Wide Web, people are still reading.
