Zapiro is being slowly sued, Laugh It Off is silent, The Protection Of Information bill is still stalking us, and in the wake of Cirque du Soleil we are left wondering what there really is to laugh about. Not.  In our own back yard, our very own wild ones are very busy preparing a holiday show that shows the world why Zip Zap is Cape Town’s oldest circus with the youngest vibe.  It should – it’s South Africa’s only youth circus, and this April, it is Just Kidding, from Thursday 21 till Wednesday 27 April.

Between Easter and Freedom Day, Zip Zap Circus School staff and members of its two outreach programmes will set the stage for some clowning around.

There’ll be bodies flying through the air, oddballs juggling, swings to sing about, acrobatic acts to scream about, gangly gumboots dances, Chinese poles, comedy and an educational feature “HIV doctor Bob and the Flying ARVs”.

The school’s HIV/AIDs youth work has the support and involvement of development and entertainment veterans, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), sponsored by Cirque du Soleil. This year, The Mayor’s Medal for Youth Affairs has been awarded to Zip Zap’s co-founder and artistic director, Brent van Rensburg.

Zip Zap runs a few other projects, besides. “A Second Chance” is a bi-weekly circus workshop in partnership with The City Of Cape Town. It focuses on youth at risk and street children, aiming to reduce the number of youth in the street, “to rehabilitate and reintegrate them in their communities of origin.”
